Quiz Pub UK

It took 4 months working 7 days a week to redesign the website and it was well worth the effort, I am so proud of the new look and I hope you like it too. If you haven't seen the website yet then this link will take you to one of the many free Quiz Questions and Answers pages, a new tab will open so you don't lose your place here.

The reason I redesigned the website was to make it mobile friendly as the old website wasn't responsive to different screen sizes and widths, a responsive website will adjust the size of the pictures, text and even change the layout to fit perfectly on any screen.

While I was working on each of the 90 pages I took the opportunity to examine the products for that page and make sure any questions were accurate and not outdated, improve any pictures that I wasn't happy with, improved the instructions in the quiz packs and lots of other upgrades. It's nice to know that everything my customers download is perfect and that they'll be very happy with their purchases.

Accurate Quiz Questions

So far I've made 143 ready made pub quizzes and for the last 3 weeks I've been going through each of them and checking for grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes and also checking each question and answer is accurate and relevant. I've taken the trouble to add side notes to some of the questions so the quiz master can quote them making it look like they've researched the question themselves, instead of me doing it for them, here's an example:
In which decade was the first 'Guinness Book of Records' published and for another point in which decade was the first 'Record Breakers' TV show? 50's (1955) & 70's (15th December 1974 on BBC1)

I came across a few quiz questions that didn't have definitive answers, one such question I remember not being able to find an accurate answer to was, "Who was the first actor to be paid $1 million for 1 picture?", I found so many conflicting answers that I thought it best to remove that question altogether and choose a better one.

At the time of writing this I'm up to checking Pub Quiz 60 so I'm 40% of the way through, but I'm not going to rush it, so I'm looking at another months work and in the mean time I'm also making a new pub quiz every week for the website to keep my existing customers happy.

New Quiz Products

A nice new shiny website needs new content and great new products so I've been busy with that too.

I've made multiple choice quiz packs in 3 difficulty levels, each pack took weeks to make but fortunately I made those before I started work on improving website. All I had to do was make the advertising graphics for them, here's one I made earlier.

Easy Multiple Choice Questions and Answers

I was getting a few requests for audio music quizzes last year, what we call in the trade 'Bits & Pieces' and I was reluctant to make these as I thought it might infringe on someones copyright, however, after doing some research I found that because they are being used in a quiz and I'm only using a few seconds of each one then I'm happy that they fall into the fair use niche for educational and review purposes.

Because the quiz teams normally have to guess the title of the song in a bits and pieces music quiz the chorus or the best part of each song is never used, a lot of the time it's just a few riffs from a guitar, or a distinctive drum beat. Apart from using these in a quiz they have absolutely no value anywhere else so I'm happy I'm not ripping anyone off and I'm even using CD's that I purchased myself so the artist has already been paid.

We get a lot of customers that want these extra bonus rounds to liven up their quiz nights such as Dingbats, Rebus Puzzles and Catchphrase picture quizzes that we already have on offer. A while back I made a quite a few speed quizzes, these involve handing out a sheet of paper and telling the quiz teams that they have 3 minutes to write down as many James Bond movies that they can think of for example, the team who gets the most wins some bonus points. After reviewing all the speed quizzes I found a few of them were dated and decided to remake all of them excluding any I didn't think were much fun to play and replacing them with much better ones.

Speed Quiz

I've hosted these speed rounds in my own quiz nights and they've gone down very well, I get lots of people come up to me at the end of the quiz praising it which gives me confidence knowing that my website customers are going to be happy with them too.

The Pub Quiz Website Content

Not everyone wants to do a fun quiz, there are a lot of people who simply want questions, maybe they're doing a quick quiz for charity or they only need 10 or 20 quiz questions for a party. Because I want to cater to everyone and keep my visitors entertained I've put a huge amount of effort into making pages and pages of free quiz questions and answers and adding fun facts and short articles accompanied by videos and so on. Each page is in effect an article, a very interesting article too and very valuable if you are looking for information, as a matter of fact these pages of free quiz questions get the most visitors, roughly 1 million visits a year! It took me a day to make each page, please take a look at this example page: Pub Quiz Questions

So, that's what I've been up to and why you haven't seen me write any blogs for a long time, before that I was making my quiz app and that took over 2 years to do and also prevented me from writing on this blog. Anyhow I'm back now so you can look forward to lots of free quiz stuff and interesting articles for you to get quiz material from, if you've never visited this blog before then scroll down or select older blogs in the archive at the top of the page on the right. I hope you find something interesting that you can use, if you do please leave comments so I know my articles are being appreciated, thanks.

Concept

At Quiz Pub UK I have amassed a considerable amount of fun trivia, fun facts, puzzles and so on that I create weekly to put into my quiz packs for pubs to download. The website ticks over but doesn't make much money, not enough for the amount of work I put into research and writing the quizzes, each quiz takes me 2 or 3 days to create.

So, I thought it would be a good idea to create a quiz game that I could put all my trivia into. It took about 3 months to learn the basics of Lua which is the language of Android. Several more months to learn Corona SDK and create the basics of the game and type out thousands of questions, plus I had to create four possible answers for each one, it was a mammoth task.

The Question Round - Knowledge

Knowledge

This took about 3000 hours working day and night, it was so monotonous and took a lot of concentration. Every question was hand picked and sorted into easy, medium and hard. Then each answer was checked to see if it was accurate. I purposely only chose questions that any native English speaking person in the world would have a chance of answering, not an easy task.

The Pyramid

The Aztec Pyramid

I decided early on that I wanted the rounds in the game to be displayed as a pyramid that you worked your way to the top to win the game. This made me think of adding a few different games in between the knowledge rounds to mix things up a bit so I went for a word game called Conundrum and a TV game show called Catchphrase. More on those games later. I put a shop at the end of each level for the players to spend what they had earned on buying lives and passes or trying to win them in one of the 9 different gamble games.
I re-drew that pyramid over 20 times over the last 2 years because I kept changing the games! This is the easy pyramid, the Aztec Zone where everything is tropical and so is the music. I then thought of pyramid locations for the medium and hard zones, I could only think of two, Egypt and Las Vegas so I went with those. As you can imagine, I've already started to create a monster project for myself. I have to create everything myself, I can't afford to pay anybody anything I'm just about surviving, just! I'm no artist and I've not really been much of a graphic artist but for the game to be taken seriously I knew I had to put a lot of effort into making the graphics as top notch as I can. In the end I've made over 1200 high definition graphics for Game Show Adventure. I'm quite proud of my frog.

Conundrum

Here's an interesting game, a hard game for many people in fact. What I did was picked a word, any word and mixed up the letters to try and form a new word or a sentence. This method hides the original word very well and is very off putting. Because this game can be so annoying I put clue tokens in the game to give you a clue to what the original word is you're looking for. This took considerable effort on my part creating hundreds of anagrams in easy, medium and hard, not only that but I had to check that you couldn't make another word out of each one too, I'm glad I've done it and been so thorough, it's one game I won't have to add to at a later date.

Catchphrase puzzle game

I'm just a sucker for punishment, I knew what I was getting myself into, basically I was creating an entire app as only one small part of my overall game. In case you've never seen the TV show Catchphrase, contestants are shown an animated picture that is trying to purvey a well known saying or phrase, song title or product. I started off by reading lots and lots of phrases and picking the ones I could translate in pictures. The best way to work out the word is to start by looking at the blank words, in the screen shot you can see it's made up of two words. Then look at the each blank word to see how long each one is. This will help you when looking at the picture, the first picture is a stage like you would see in a theater. Behind this is a train station. See if you can figure out the phrase before I give you the answer.

I did some clever programming in this game. I made the code strip all the spaces out of the phrase, then take out all the repeat letters, then add random letters to make up 10 and display them at the bottom of the screen for the players to tap, like a small keyboard, that you use to fill in the blank tiles in the middle of the screen.

The catchphrase in the picture is Play Station.

I've also gone to the trouble to make the boxes different and the amount of them too. This game is at the very top of the pyramid so when you get here you can relax. I spent a lot of time on the graphics in this game as you can see in the screen shot. If you've never seen this game on the TV then it's a simple case of choosing a box for yourself, then proceeding to open the others and getting offers for your box each time. Can you win the million? If you do you get a trophy to add to your trophy room. At this point my game has a definite theme, game shows hence the name Game show Adventure!

I've only scratched the surface so far! I've created other types of puzzles and arcade style games far too many to mention in this already very long blog page. The History of Tea

I've read somewhere that tea was an accidental discovery, like most discoveries are,
by a Chinese Emperor Shen Nung who was drinking hot water in his garden when
some tea leaves accidentally blew into his cup from a nearby tree.

Of course the story is so old that it could be a myth and no-one knows for sure.
One argument is did India or China discover tea first, from what I've read there is
a high probability that tea did in fact get discovered in China first.
Where did the saying Cha come from? Cha is a Chinese character that was added
to the language in A.D.3 specifically to describe hot water infused with tea leaves.
And to bolster the argument further it was many centuries later that tea plants were
imported into to Calcutta from China to begin mass cultivation for the British market.

How about the tea bag?

Another misconception is that Tetley's invented the tea bag,
well they didn't, in fact they didn't start making tea bags until
nearly 50 years after they were being widely used in the USA.
The tea bag was invented by an American named Thomas Sullivan, a New York tea merchant, who started to send samples of tea to his customers in small silken bags in 1908 and the concept quickly caught on as a convenient and less messy way to make a cuppa.

It was Tetley in 1953 that drove the introduction of tea bags in Britain, in the 60's
tea bags only made up 3% of all tea drunk in the UK, this was due mainly to the
fact that Britons returning from the US would tell horror stories of being served a
luke warm cup of water with a tea bag on the side.
Anyhow, Tetley managed to sway the British public and completely reversed the
way they made their tea, by dispensing of the string attached to the bag so it could
be allowed to move freely in the teapot, now only 3% of tea is made with loose leaves!

Why do we add milk to our tea?

In the early years green tea was the tea of choice but tea was expensive
which lead some greedy and unscrupulous traders to add other leaves to mix some of
which were poisonous. This lead to black tea becoming more popular and because
black tea is more bitter people added milk and sugar to make it taste better.

Health benefits of tea

Of all the studies that have been made about tea there have never been found any
harmful effects, in fact tea has less caffeine than coffee.
Tea has been shown to reduce cholesterol, combat diabetes, cancer and even promote
weight loss. Tea is packed with antioxidants and is good for circulation thus is
good for your heart and brain, it even reduces the lung damage caused by smoking.

Which is the best tea to drink?

All of them! Although, like most foods, the more processed it is the less of the good
stuff it contains even the most processed teas are still very good for you.
Here is a list of popular teas by order of highest to lowest anti-oxidizing powers.

Brain Teaser 1

Two Mafia bosses were sat at a bar drinking scotch on the rocks one fine summer evening in New York.
Unknown to them one of their enemies had instructed the bar man to poison all their drinks.
One of the Mafia bosses drank a lot faster than the other one, infact he drank 5 glasses of Scotch by the time the other one had only drunk 1 glass of Scotch!
The boss that had only drunk one glass died on the spot, but the other boss that drank 5 glasses felt no ill effects at all even though all his drinks had been poisoned in exactly the same way, how can this be?

First I'm going to give you some facts that you can use to make original quiz questions and then I'm going to finish off with some great fun questions about the actual states names.

The States of America

Everybody knows that there are 50 states that share sovereignty with the United States federal government.
Let's begin with the history of how the states came into existence and how they evolved over time.

Did you know America was given the name by a German map maker? Back in 1507 Martin Waldseemüller created a map of the world on which he named the great lands of the Western Hemisphere "America" after the Italian explorer and navigator Amerigo Vespucci.

The states started out with 13 British colonies, the first of which was Virginia founded in 1607 and lastly by Georgia in 1733. The colonies joined together to declare independence in 1776.

Quiz Facts
The state of Virginia was named after Queen Elizabeth I, the virgin queen.
Georgia was named after King George II

The term United States of America was first coined in 1776 when Thomas Jefferson included the phrase in all capital letters in the heading of his "original Rough draught" of the Declaration of Independence.

The Original 13 States of America

Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts Bay, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island.

Delaware was given the name held as a title by Thomas West, 3rd Baron De La Warr, the Governor of Virginia from 1610 until 1618. At that time the area was considered to be part of the Virginia colony.

Pennsylvania was named after William Penn who founded a colony there for the religious freedom of Quakers, and named it after his family "Penn" and the "woods" (from Latin) sylvania.

New Jersey was named by James, brother of King Charles II of England, who named the colony New Jersey to honour Sir George Carteret, who had been the Governor of Jersey, a British island in the English Channel.

Connecticut gets it's name from the Connecticut River which got its name from the Mohican Indian word "quonehtacut", which means "the place of the long tidal river."

Massachusetts got its name from the Massachusetts Bay which was given its name by the Pilgrim Fathers who founded the Plymouth Colony in 1620. They named the Bay after the Algonquian Indians whose name was derived from mass-adchu-seuck or 'people from the big hill'.

Maryland is named in honour of Henrietta Maria of France, wife of Charles I of England. It was also the capital of United States of America from 1783 to 1784.

North and South Carolina were named in honour of King Charles l. Carolus is Latin for Charles. The nickname for South Carolina is the Palmetto State.

New Hampshire got it's name from Captain John Mason and was named after the English county of Hampshire. John Mason was one of the founders of Portsmouth in 1630.

New York got its name from the English Duke of York and Albany (and the brother of England's King Charles II) in 1664 when the region was originally called "New Amsterdam" by the Dutch settlers.

Rhode Island got its name from the Dutch explorer Adriaen Block, there in 1635, who called it 'Roodt Eylandt.' The words mean red island and was in reference to the red clay that was prominent and which surrounded the shoreline.

Obviously if I were to list all 50 states like this it would take me days so let's move on to some great facts that you can use as quiz questions.

50 States of America

Here are all 50 states followed by the two letter abbreviation used in the post code, zip code, the year it became a state and last but not least the capital city of each state. Please note that over half of the capital cities of the 50 States of America are not the most populated.

Alabama AL 1819 Montgomery
Alaska AK 1959 Juneau
Arizona AZ 1912 Phoenix
Arkansas AR 1836 Little Rock
California CA 1850 Sacramento
Colorado CO 1876 Denver
Connecticut CT 1788 Hartford
Delaware DE 1787 Dover
Florida FL 1845 Tallahassee
Georgia GA 1788 Atlanta
Hawaii HI 1959 Honolulu
Idaho ID 1890 Boise
Illinois IL 1818 Springfield
Indiana IN 1816 Indianapolis
Iowa IA 1846 Des Moines
Kansas KS 1861 Topeka
Kentucky KY 1792 Frankfort
Louisiana LA 1812 Baton Rouge
Maine ME 1820 Augusta
Maryland MD 1788 Annapolis
Massachusetts MA 1788 Boston
Michigan MI 1837 Lansing
Minnesota MN 1858 Saint Paul
Mississippi MS 1817 Jackson
Missouri MO 1821 Jefferson City
Montana MT 1889 Helena
Nebraska NE 1867 Lincoln
Nevada NV 1864 Carson City
New Hampshire NH 1788 Concord
New Jersey NJ 1787 Trenton
New Mexico NM 1912 Santa Fe
New York NY 1788 Albany
North Carolina NC 1789 Raleigh
North Dakota ND 1889 Bismark
Ohio OH 1803 Columbus
Oklahoma OK 1907 Oklahoma City
Oregon OR 1859 Salem
Pennsylvania PA 1787 Harrisburg
Rhode Island RI 1790 Providence
South Carolina SC 1788 Columbia
South Dakota SD 1889 Pierre
Tennessee TN 1796 Nashville
Texas TX 1845 Austin
Utah UT 1896 Salt Lake City
Vermont VT 1791 Montpelier
Virginia VA 1788 Richmond
Washington WA 1889 Olympia
West Virginia WV 1863 Charleston
Wisconsin WI 1848 Madison
Wyoming WY 1890 Cheyenne

Using the list above and being creative you can come up with such quiz questions as these..

Biggest Things in the World

When you think about the subject title above you probably think of skyscrapers, waterfalls, aeroplanes and cars. I don't like to be so obvious when making quizzes and spend a lot of time being creative, that's what keeps our customers coming back for more. It's much better to make your own quiz questions because it's more entertaining for the quiz teams. So in this article I'm going to give you some of my ideas for making a good quiz round which I call..

To start this subject off we will take a look at Counties in the UK and States in the USA.
I started with a list of counties in the UK and Wikipedia kindly provided me with all the
statistics I could ever wish for. When we say biggest county we are normally talking about population, although area can also be used to get more quiz questions.

Top Ten Counties in the UK by population

1. Greater London 8,196,700

There are a number of quiz questions we can glean from this list.

Which is the biggest county in the UK?
What are the three biggest counties in the UK?
What is the population of Greater London, to the nearest million?
Put these counties in order of size from biggest to smallest, Essex, Kent and the West Midlands.
Which has the biggest population, South Yorkshire or West Yorkshire?
True or False, Greater London has more people living in it than the West Midlands, Manchester and West Yorkshire combined?
6 different types of questions all about the same subject, and they are interesting questions that anyone can have a guess at answering!
I could go on and on but you can see the way my mind works in creating questions from a list of statistics.
When I come across questions like that I dig deeper to create my own. Let's take a look at the list of U.S. states by population and see what questions we can come up with.

Which is the second most populated state in the USA?
Which has the biggest population, New York or Texas?
To the nearest million, what is the population of the state of New York?
Put these U.S. states in order of size from most populated to least, Florida, New York and Texas.
Does California have twice as many or three times as many people living in it than Florida?
True or False, Michigan has more people living in it than Illinois?
Monopoly Board Game

Greetings fellow quizzer. The worlds biggest selling board game and the worlds most popular board game by far which sells in over 100 countries and translated into 43 different languages is Monopoly.
So why am I talking about Monopoly when I make quizzes for living? Easy, you can literally make hundreds of quiz questions if you study the game and the good thing is that everybody has played it.

I make fun quizzes for Pubs and Quiz Masters every week and questions like "how many bars are on the jail in Monopoly?" are fun and easy questions that the quiz teams just love to bits. So in this weeks article I'm going to give you some of my favourite Monopoly Quiz Questions and provide you with some extra knowledge so that you can create more of your own.

The Monopoly Board

A picture of a Monopoly Board

Just by studying the board you can get a plethora of questions to quiz your teams. Immediately by looking at the corners I can see that the FREE PARKING car is red, the policeman is blowing a whistle, there are three bars on the IN JAIL picture and the GO arrow is red. Here's some quiz questions I just grabbed from the board in 5 minutes.

Monopoly Questions

1. How many "Chance" squares are there on a Monopoly board?
2. How many Community Chest squares are there on a Monopoly board?
3. How many utility properties are there in Monopoly?
4. In Monopoly, a picture of what is used for Super Tax?
5. Can you name the four Monopoly train stations?
6. What symbol is used for Chance in the board game of Monopoly?
7. How many properties are there on a Monopoly board?
8. On a Monopoly board, what colour is Pall Mall?

Easy questions when you are looking at a picture of the board but not so easy when you are in a pub playing a quiz. There are many more quiz questions you can preen from the picture if you use your imagination.
Let's move onto making more interesting questions by studying the history of Monopoly.

The History of Monopoly

The game has been on sale since 1935 in the US by the Parker Brothers and later in 1941 in the UK by Waddingtons. It was invented initially by an American woman named Elizabeth (Lizzie) J. Maggie Phillips back in 1903 who made it to teach people about the single tax theory of Henry George. Later Charles Darrow took the idea and created what we now know as Monopoly although it had to go through many updates up to the 1970's before it became what we play today.

Initially, Parker Brothers rejected the game as they said it had 3 major flaws which included the games lengthy game play and complexity. Note: I have seen a quiz question that states that the game had 52 fundamental errors, it is incorrect. When a number of department stores were placing large orders from Charles Darrow for the game the Parker Brothers got wind of it and changed their mind. They bought the copyright from Charles and within a year they were making 20,000 sets a week making Charles the worlds first millionaire game designer in history.

Interesting Facts about Monopoly

The longest ever game of Monopoly lasted for 70 days but other world records include 45 days underwater, 8 days on a balance beam, 11 days in a tree house, 16 days in a moving elevator and 36 hours upside down!

The most expensive set ever made had a price tag of $2 million, the board was made of solid 23 carat gold and the dice were diamond studded.

Jake the Jailbird is the name of the man in jail and the police officer's name is Edgar Mallory.

More than 1 billion people have played the game since 1935.

The name of the mascot, the man in the centre of the board, is Rich Uncle Pennybags.

The game was used to smuggle escape plans into German POW camps during WWII and they even hid real money inside the games play money.

The game has even featured on a US postage stamp.

Tokens from the game have even been flown into space aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis!

Bazinga!

Danger, Will Robinson.

They don't like it up 'em.

Is it 'cause I is black?

I pity the fool.

Are you 'avin a laugh?

He's dead, Jim

You should have got nearly all of them.
You probably remember the TV series but can you remember the characters name? Don't skip straight to the answers yet have a good think first, it will be more satisfying when you get them.

OK

Here are the answers..

Bazinga! Was Sheldon Cooper's catchphrase from the award winning and hugely successful Big Bang Theory. He used this phrase instead of gotcha! And most of his jokes were very unfunny, which made them funny. Superb.

"Danger, Will Robinson" was the iconic words spoken by the robot (he didn't have an actual name) from Lost In Space.

"They don't like it up 'em", was one of Lance Corporal Jones's catchphrases from Dad's Army. Other famous catchphrases from Jones were, "Don't panic!" and "permission to speak sir."

Is it 'cause I is black? Was one of many catchphrases from Ali G, the ironic thing is he wasn't black but he was a black rapper wannabe. Sacha Baron Cohen is the actor behind Ali G and the TV show was called "Da Ali G Show" which went on to become a film called "Ali G in da house".

"I pity the fool" is the line every celebrity impersonator quotes when doing a take off of Mr T from the A Team. Mr T you may remember had a fear of flying and all kinds of funny ways were thought up to get him on a plane against his will.

"Are you 'avin a laugh? Is he having a laugh?" Is the catchphrase of a character of a character of the British sitcom Extras. The main characters name was Andy Millman who is a full time Extra for films and who's ambition is to be a famous actor. He got a screen play he wrote accepted by the BBC called "When the whistle blows" and he played a factory manager by the name of Ray Stokes who wears a black curly wig and oversized glasses.

And last but not least, "He's dead, Jim."
One of the top 100 well known catchphrases of all time by the legenday Dr Leonard "Bones" McCoy from Star Trek.

These catchphrases are taken from Quiz Pack 96 from the Quiz Pub UK website. The Quiz Masterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12369703565354719951noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7486347225712246411.post-3378303696134746842013-03-28T08:07:00.000-07:002014-02-23T04:30:25.190-08:00CatchphraseDo you remember the brilliant game show called Catchphrase?

It was hosted by a great Irish presenter called Roy Walker and for it's time the cash prizes were very big.

I'm surprised it hasn't made a come back after all these years, but I can only imagine the work involved in creating all the animated pictures that went with each catchphrase.

If you've never seen the show I'll explain.

They took an everyday phrase like fish and chips then turned it into pictures and the contestants had to be the first on the buzzer to guess what phrase the picture represented.

Roy Walker was always saying "say what you see!"

I've made a few examples for you to have a go at yourselves, see if you can get them all correct.
